CARC Podcast Banner

The democratic peace thesis holds that democracy encourages peaceful settlement of disputes. However, many democracies tend to be quite violent and few more so than Jamaica. Does democracy ensure peace or is it a source of violence?

Join us as noted historical and cultural sociologist, National Book Award-winning author, and Harvard University John Cowles Professor of Sociology Orlando Patterson presents this topical discussion. Professor Patterson is uniquely well-suited to address this subject, which is the topic of his forthcoming book, as he served as special advisor to the President of Jamaica, Michael Manley, from 1972-1979.
