One of the latest generative AI technologies — ChatGPT — has been the subject of intense debate, interest, and controversy since its release in late 2022. From claims that it will revolutionize writing and communication in many professional jobs, to real concerns about its accuracy and other ethical matters, ChatGPT has been talked about in the press and chewed over on social media.
It was a pleasure to be able to speak to Jane Rosenzweig, Director of the Harvard Writing Center, about some of her thoughts about this new technology — from her perspective as a long-time writing instructor. What are some of the ways ChatGPT can impede our writing process or obstruct our thinking? How might it evolve in the future beyond what it can do now?
