Episode 44
“I don’t see why the climate is not on the front page of every newspaper every single day. Every story has a climate change angle, every election story, every economic decision.”
Denise Hruby, Salata Institute Interview, January 2024
Denise Hruby, a 2024 Nieman Foundation for Journalism fellow at Harvard University, is an Austrian-born environment reporter who writes for The New York Times, The Washington Post, and National Geographic. She spent the past year as a Nieman fellow studying how journalists can improve reporting on climate change and biodiversity to better inform solutions to the planet’s problems. She is preparing to share her findings through a digital handbook, workshops, and educational curriculum tailored for journalists and students.
Having just moderated a panel as part of Harvard’s Climate Action Week on the subject of “Climate in the Newsroom”, Denise joined us to talk about what she’s learned during her time at Harvard; what she thinks journalists need to do better regarding their climate reporting; and what two Harvard Extension School faculty research aide students contributed to her work as a Nieman fellow.
Denise’s in-depth spotlight of a unique Austrian biologist and bird conservationist in an August 2023 New York Times piece was a widely read NYT profile of last year.
