Episode 26

Ryan Christopher Jones (ALB 2022) is a long-time photojournalist. Starting from reporting he did for The Fresno Bee many years ago, Ryan’s portfolio of work has grown considerably and he is now a regular contributor to The New York Times. His work has also appeared in The Atlantic, DerSpiegel, The Washington Post, The Intercept, and other outlets.

A July 2020 New York Times piece titled “The Last Anointing” about Catholic priests in the Boston area performing last rites for Covid-19 patients, for which Ryan contributed the stunning accompanying photography, was recently honored by the Religion News Association for excellence in religion reporting. On February 10, 2022, Ryan was announced as a winner of the 2022 American Mosaic Journalism prize.

We had the great pleasure to speak to Ryan recently about the origins of his work, how his photojournalism has evolved and developed over the years, some of the challenges presented by the projects he was worked on, and what lies ahead for him.
