Episode 61

“…Every time you listen to a librarian, you pick up something [new].

We are the second largest library in the world, here at Harvard. To not take advantage of that is, truthfully, a [mistake], for you as a scholar.

Especially during the academic year, there are new journals, new articles, new popular media pieces, new photos, new videos, new surveys, new books coming out. It’s pivotal to take advantage of HOLLIS [and the Harvard library].”

Margaret-Ann Simonetta is an alumna of Harvard Extension School who holds both an ALB and an ALM degree. She is currently a PhD candidate at Harvard University, a teaching assistant, and a senior teaching fellow. Starting her professional career as a broadcast journalist in New York, Margaret-Ann pivoted to advancing her academic work in three successive degree programs at Harvard University. Her current scholarly interests focus on fandoms and fan communities, in her doctoral work at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

We spoke to Margaret-Ann about her unique experiences at Harvard; how her learning and studying habits and methods evolved during her successive degree program experiences; how she has benefited from thoroughly using the Harvard library system and HOLLIS; and insights she shares into how to make the most of your student experiences at Harvard and how to know if you’re ready for a PhD program.
